Pi’s Internal Staff Development Program – from Apprentice to Applications Engineer

Process Instruments (Pi) have always championed the development of employees, allowing them to grow alongside the business and develop their skill set through internal and external training.

Pi Apprentice Joins the Technical Support Team

Process Instruments - BenPi’s latest employee to undertake such a development is apprentice Ben Turner.

Ben started working for Pi in October 2017 as an Electrical Engineering Apprentice in the Manufacturing department. Here, Ben was tasked with building Pi’s CRONOS® and CRIUS® instrument controllers with a selection of sensors measuring parameters, such as streaming current, chlorine dioxide, ORP and dissolved oxygen.

Now in the second year of his apprenticeship at Nelson and Colne College, Ben has been asked to join Pi’s Technical Support team, providing immediate assistance to customers, distributors and the sales team. As part of his new role, Ben has obtained his Safety Passport and is now able to visit sites to see the analysers and controllers he used to build, in operation.

Regarding his new role, Ben said:

“I was both surprised and excited to be considered for a role in the Technical Support team. Since the move, Pi has provided me with fantastic support, especially Wes and Jonathan who I now work alongside. This is a great opportunity for me to develop my current skills and gain new ones, and I now hope to progress to the Higher National Certificate to develop my ability to solve electrical engineering problems.”

Ben hopes to follow in the footsteps of his mentor and Applications Engineer, Wesley Ashworth, who also started his Pi career as an apprentice in October 2011. Like Ben, Wes initially worked in Manufacturing before progressing to the Technical Support team and completing his Higher National Certificate.

Here at Pi, we currently have seven apprentices who are studying in a range of areas, from electronics to accountancy. In the past, three employees have completed their apprenticeships and the Higher National Certificate. As well as attending training events, some of these employees have since provided training to customers worldwide.
